Muscles don’t work in isolation. Many function Muscles don’t work in isolation.  Many function by providing opposing, directional, or contralateral pulls at joints to achieve efficient movement that is called force-couple relationships.

For example, maintenance of a neutral pelvic position is achieved via opposing force-couples between four major muscle groups that all have attachments on the pelvis. The rectus abdominis pulls upward on the anterior, inferior pelvis, while the hip flexors pull downward on the anterior, superior pelvis.  On the back side of the body, the hamstrings pull downward on the posterior, inferior pelvis, while the erector spinae pull upward on the posterior, superior pelvis.

When these muscles demonstrate good balance, the pelvis holds an optimal position.

Answer is NO.

Researchers had subjects perform two 30-minute bouts of exercise: a relatively low intensity that is respiratory exchange ratio = 0.88 and a relatively high intensity bout that is respiratory exchange ratio = 0.93. 

For the low intensity exercise, subjects burned a total of 240 calories, with 96 of those calories coming from fat. On the other hand, during the high intensity bout, a total of 450 calories were burned, with 108 of those calories coming from fat. It is important that the total number of calories burned is what determines weight loss, regardless of the source of those calories.

When walking, gluteal activity is critical to decelerate the internal rotation associated with each step.  A lack of adequate gluteal activity may fail to protect the integrity of the knee as this muscle becomes lengthened and weakened.

Two terms associated with core training are core stability and core stabilization. These terms relate to the ability of the core muscles to protect the spine.
